Jamaica Kincaid Essays - Girl, Jamaica Kincaid, Kincaid,

Jamaica Kincaid Jamaica Kincaid Girl is story to be told. Kincaid a teenager, being raised by her mother during the Colonization were men ruled. The mother was raising Kincaid to be housewife in Antigua (an Island in the Caribbean), where culture is very important. I personally think that the mother was too harsh on the child. It seems there were not a relationship in there, everything were orders. If they had a relationship, it was very different of todays relationships. Wash the white clothes on Monday; this is how to sew in a button; this is how to hem a dress; this is how to grow okra, are some of the things that mom was teaching the daughter. If one as a parent talks to the teenager in that way, I believe the teenager will run away. In a way, I see that the mother wants the best for the daughter but at the same time is like Mom does not have faith in her. One of the things that caught my attention was when she said and I quote On Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming . The mother seems to be worried about the Girl to be promiscuous. She emphasizes a couple of time how to be a lady and even teach her how to make a good medicine to throw away a child before it even becomes a child. The Girl seemed to interrupt the mother just twice trying to defend herself, but she wasnt successful. In my opinion todays date mother/daughter relationships are not like that. In the society in this modern era, one as a parent cannot talk like to a daughter. One as a parent, we try to keep our daughters innocence the longest. In that moment Mom was just preparing her to be a housewife. Today we teach our daughters more by example; to be independent and to have a good education (career) so they can be successful in life.
