The term ââ¬Å"corporate social responsibilityâ⬠(CSR), is described by the International Organization for Standardization (known as ISO) strategic advisory group on CSR as ââ¬Å"a balanced approachâ⬠which organizations use to handle economic, social and environmental issues in order to benefit people, communities and society (ISO, 2002). Also, Burchell (2008: 252) believes that CSR has ââ¬Å"the power to rebuildâ⬠the values of the contemporary corporation and the subsequent behavior and practice that such values inflict. Nowadays, more and more companies are aware of the significance of CSR reporting and corporate social responsibility disclosure (CSRD), and realizing that in the long term, it may facilitate the increase of company value and the acceleration of business growth (KPMG, 2008). Nevertheless, this does not necessarily result in more responsible performance. In this dissertation, the successive employee suicides at Foxconn are chosen in order to examine how a company accounts for events through social and environmental disclosure. The dissertation illustrates how a company responds to media reports on negative events.
